Comedy for the Camera: Finding the truth - and then the laughs - in any comedic script
4-DAY INTENSIVE WORKSHOP WITH COMEDIC ACTOR/INSTRUCTOR JAMIE LAMB
Course Description: Using the same principles and techniques developed in other AAS "dramatic" classes, the actor will explore how to best apply such skills to comedic scripts. Eclectic scenes from television sitcoms (both new and previously produced) will be used to help students hone their ability to create a wonderfully original comedic character
Class Focus: Actors will learn to easily identify and then move beyond the "average" comedy audition, in favour of one that delivers more unique, original choices that truly get laughs, and ultimately creates an inspired comedic character that is grounded in truth, and lives and breathes flawlessly with the text provided. There will be further in-depth look at the mechanics of comedy scenes, accessing the POV of comedic writer, and the comedic director. Actors will become skilled at finding the continuous "setup and punchline" effect that is hidden in every comedic script. Actors will also refine their own personal comedic skills and find where their best bookable skills lie. This is an excellent opportunity for the dramatic actor who wishes to continue their study of comedy; and for the working comedian who wishes more insight into on-camera comedic performance techniques.
Class Content (includes): Text analysis, character development, relationship + environment study, on camera audition and on set technique + preparation, the call back with one redirect, the working call back, creating the illusion of spontaneity + immediacy in scripted work, defining and structuring the frame and defining industry competitiveness. SEVERAL AUDITION SCENES + SEVERAL PARTNERED SCENES.
Class Agenda:
On camera tool acquisition, isolating individual strengths + weaknesses, defining styles of performance in different genres, overcoming previous casting and project limitations, redefining character range, defining how to translate work effectively + competitively on screen, expanding actor role range and flexibility. All classes at AAS are documented on DVD for in class review. The camera rolls as instructor notes are documented for continued at home learning, understanding and development.
The Follow-Up Consultation: Upon completion of the workshop, Jamie will take time to look back at the actor's DVD, and assess the actor's overall strengths, weaknesses, hooks, as well as his or her individual idiosyncrasies. This evaluation enables actors to see whether they have created a tangible framework from which to launch and build a career. Jamie will speak to the actor's agent, if the agent so desires.
Requirements: Headshot, resume and previous theoretical and practical on camera experience. Admission at the discretion of the Class Instructor.
